Bachata Classes Gold Coast
Do you know your BACHATA? π At Passada HQ, you guys have the chance to learn Sensual Bachata and Dominican Bachata, but what’s the difference you ask? We’ll avoid a prolonged history lesson here, so we’ll keep things simple π€.
Bachata is a specific style of dance and music that originates in π©π΄π©π΄ But chances are you’ve seen it done different from the Dominican people. You’ve probably seen body rolls, waves, people getting up in each other’s grill, etc etc. Bachata may have originated in the Dominican Republic but it has undergone so many phases.
So, Dominican bachata (or simply called bachata by Dominicans, since it is their music and their dance; and also Jojo’s preferred style) is known to everyone outside the Domincan Republic as Domincan bachata or bachata Dominicana. The focus is on hips and footwork which are danced in connection with the instruments typical to bachata music – the guira, bongo and guitar. It is widely danced throughout the Carribean.
Sensual bachata (Frenchy’s preferred styleπΊπΎ) is exactly as it’s name suggests. Sensual bachata originates from Cadiz in Spain πͺπΈ and while it has the same basic steps as bachata (Dominican), there are added dance elements and styling from salsa, tango, ballroom and zouk lambada and rather than footwork and constant hip movements, the focus is on circular movements, body isolations and dips.
The sound of bachata music πΆ from the Dominican Republic is very different to international Bachata music – even recently released music from DR has a sound which is distinctly different to music that originates outside of DR.
Sensual bachata is known for often using rnb & pop covers and remixes (although it is still possible that these remixes use the core instruments and rhythms of bachata).
Hope this helps! At the end of the day, it’s still one dance, so one is not better than the other. It all comes down to personal preference and often, which music you connect to.
For an example of sensual bachata, check out our second last post. This vid ππΎππΎ is Bachata (Dominican). They’re equally beautiful so why not learn both?!.
Finally & very importanly, it’s BACHATA, not CIABATTA π
